INNOVATION GIRLS
Workshop Day 2019
Innovation Girls took place on Thursday the 2nd May at Flinders University, Tonsley Innovation District.
It was open to female students in year 9 and 10 from schools in the City of Marion – especially those who are traditionally under-represented in STEM study and careers.
The event featured rapid-fire STEM role model talks, hands-on workshops integrating STEM, innovation and entrepreneurship, and reflection on the nature of STEM Education in schools today.

GUEST SPEAKERS
Bella has a PhD (Medicine) on gastrointestinal toxicities of cancer treatment. She now works as an online course facilitator at UniSA. She was awarded the South Australian Young Achiever of the Year in Science and Technology in 2017.
Fiona Nguyen
Fi is an entrepreneur, business owner of Girl Friday IP, and master baker. Fi has a background in forensic and analytical chemistry and intellectual property. She provides creative intellectual property solutions, helped by her background in science.
Annmarie Mabarrack
Annmarie is a GIS professional, currently working with the City of Marion. Her expertise in GIS has guided land use planning, pest and biodiversity management, emergency management. She was recently awarded the Women’s Leadership Award through the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards.
Cass Gannon
Cass works with the City of Marion and Flinders New Venture Institute as an Innovation Leader and mentor to participants in the Advanced Manufacturing Accelerator.

GIRLS: A STEM LIFE
Workshop Day 2018
“Girls: A STEM Life” was a one day event on Friday May 25th 2018, held in the Monica Farrelly Atrium at Cabra Dominican College.
It was open to female students in year 9 and 10 from schools in the western suburbs, including the City of Marion, targeting girls from low SES backgrounds.
The event featured rapid-fire female STEM role model talks, and hands-on workshops integrating STEM, innovation and entrepreneurship.
GUEST SPEAKERS
Bella has a PhD (Medicine) on gastrointestinal toxicities of cancer treatment. She now works as an online course facilitator for the Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition and Exercise) at UniSA. She was awarded the South Australian Young Achiever of the Year in Science and Technology in 2017. Her passion for nutrition, exercise, quality teaching and science had led her to where she is now.
Michelle is an entrepreneur, academic and co-founder of the AI based fertility company, Life Whisperer. She has spent time in science research, specialising in predictive genetics and translational medicine. Michelle then moved into entrepreneurship, combining technology and science in a number of start-up companies.
Heather is an electrical engineer, policy and strategy adviser with a strong technical background in energy and climate change. She has worked as a consulting engineer on energy, and worked with State Government to develop public policy. She was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and in 2016 traveled to USA, Germany, Denmark, UK and Japan to research community led energy initiatives. She has her own consulting, Changing Weather.
Ellie has a background in Applied Physics, and has turned her skills to aerial photogrammetry, with the Adelaide based company, Aerometrex. Aerometrex performs aerial surveys and generates 3D models of spaces for a wide range of applications.
INDUSTRY-LED WORKSHOPS
Sustainable Smart Fashion – From Found
From Found are a local Adelaide-based social enterprise, creating sustainable fashion, made by refugee women. Students in this workshop will create their own one-off item using recycled fabrics, and embed wearable technology to create a smart garment.
Environmental Packaging – Adelaide Fresh
Adelaide Fresh are a local grocers who are interested in sustainability and environmentally friendly packaging. Students in this workshop will explore the demands and desires of consumers, using their empathy to ideate and prototype alternative solutions to food packaging.
Virtual Reality Experiences – Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy students will lead this session, addressing the needs to very sick children in hospitals who miss out on daily experiences due to their illnesses. Using VR can help these children experience the outdoors, school, or other experiences they miss, as a vital part of therapy. Students in this workshop will create their own 360 VR experience for sick children.
Off-grid shelters – Disaster relief engineering
Engineering students will facilitate this session, using both engineering design processes and scientific inquiry to develop a low-cost light from seawater for a flat-pack cardboard shelter so that homeless can shelter with dignity.
